Geneva Red

25.01.2016

Jerry Felter, also known as "Pickle" is the founder of "Pickles Blues Extravaganza", an event put on for over 20 years in Lima, Ohio to raise money to bring artists to the various Lima schools to teach young people about the blues. My band Geneva Red & The Roadsters was hired over 10 years ago to perform at Pickles Blues Extravaganza and subsequently my duo, The Original Delta Fireballs was brought in to be the Artists in Residence 3 times in the years that followed teaching beginning blues harmonica.

This years program started on Monday, January 11 and ran until Friday, January 15, 2016. We were scheduled to teach two 8th grade classes at the Liberty Arts Magnet school for 2 hours each per day for 4 days and the Lima High School Jazz Band for 1 hour for 3 days. On the final day, Friday, we would then bring everyone together to perform with The Original Delta Fireballs (Jackie 5&Dime and myself) for the rest of the school, the teachers, parents and community. Unfortunately as luck would have it, the weather turned very cold and snowy and we lost 2 of our 4 days due to school closing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sadly, having to make up for the lost days, we were forced to cancel the High school portion of our residency and just focus on teaching the two 8th grade classes harmonica. Jackie had written four 3-man horn section parts, plus rhythm section parts to add the high school students to the accompaniment of the 50 or more harp players for a huge finale

The Lima News newspaper came and took pictures on the first day and a photo and short caption were printed in the following days newspaper. The TV station "Your News Now", came out on Thursday and Friday for the final performance to cover the event for the evenings news broadcasts. They aired on Thursday, January 14th at 6:00 and 11:00 pm and Friday, January 15th at 6:00 and 11:00 pm. You can contact "Your News Now" in Lima, Ohio for the news video clips

Just last week we received a nice card from one of the schools main administrators, Sally Windle.

We also received an amazing response from the kids in the form of Thank You notes!
