Gary Allegretto brings Harmonikids to his native state of Delaware

Harmonikids comes to Delaware

Hohner Artist Gary Allegretto was recently back in his home state of Delaware, giving away Hohner harmonicas and teaching kids the joys of making music.

From Delaware Online – Gary Allegretto, a Delaware native now living in Los Angeles, was teaching young, old and those in between how to play harmonica. Allegretto runs Harmonikids, a nonpro?t music therapy organization devoted to special-needs kids worldwide.

He said he started teaching kids in hospitals in 1985, including Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Rockland.

“Music is the universal language and harmonica is easy access to that,” he said, adding music can make people happy and heal them. “Music is a healing force and that’s not just here – around the world. I’ve seen it work miracles.

“That’s why it’s important.”

Eleven-year-old Luke Moore, of Wilmington, was one of Allegretto’s students Sunday. Luke hadn’t decided what he preferred: the blues or harmonica lessons.

“I’m in the middle, really,” he said. When asked why he was taking harmonica lessons, Moore had a not-so-simple answer: “My mom wanted me to and because like I used to have an interest but I don’t really anymore but she wanted me to.”
