Gabby Young & Other Animals

Early Life
Gabby Young was born in Bath. She spent her early life in Wiltshire, surrounded by the lush countryside of the Marlborough Downs, where her imagination was able to run riot; she and her sister were fond of holding impromptu plays and concerts from a very young age. She was on track to become an opera singer until Jeff Buckley and the jazz greats inspired her to change musical direction.

Thyroid Cancer
Gabby’s unique perspective of the world around her is inspired as much by imagination as real events; however when thyroid cancer threatened to take her classically trained voice at the age of 22, she got serious about recording her stories. Music kept her incredibly positive throughout this turbulent time; using her recovery period to pen her melodies, she took in influences from around the world to fuel the heartfelt emotion, which shines through her beautifully haunting songs. As she puts it, ‘I feel blessed rather than afflicted'.

The Other Animals
Over 6 years ago, Gabby formed her existing band, normally a 5-7 piece, who complete the magical musical fairground we know today. Using a wide range of instruments, most notably trumpet; violin; trombone; piano and accordion, Young’s avant-garde fusion of globally-influenced folk combines Balkan brass, jazz and swing in an aural antiques shop from the future to produce what has been affectionately dubbed Circus Swing by those who realised there was no existing genre to encompass her unique sound.

Fashion and Crowdfunding

Her ‘if I can balance it on my head, I’ll rock it’ approach to dressing-up inspired Stylist and Artrocker to hail her as a fashion icon. It’s all part of the same DIY, fan-engaging ethos that saw Gabby fund releases through crowdfunding sites. Most recently she raised an amazing £9,000 in just four weeks to help record the latest album. In style and in business, Young is one of life’s collectors and upcyclers.

‘One Foot In Front of The Other’ (Gift of the Gab Records) released in the UK on 2 June 2014, is the follow up to the critically acclaimed 2012 album, ‘The Band Called Out For More.’ It has already gathered a considerable collection of 4-star reviews from the likes of The Guardian, Financial Times, Daily Mirror and numerous music publications.

Tour dates early this year included the Middle East and the USA, where she was invited to showcase at the prestigious SXSW Festival.  Gabby has also spent the first part of 2014 performing in France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Hungary and Romania. UK Summer Festival appearances have also been confirmed.

Hohner are perfect for our music as they make instruments that sound great, look beautiful and are reliable enough to with stand our frantic touring schedule! We are very thankful to the very supportive team at Hohner.
